What You Need Before Your First Class

Starting jazz dance means showing up ready to move, learn, and enjoy yourself. But there's a few practical things worth knowing before you walk through our door. Nothing complicated—just the basics that help everyone get off to a good start.

What to Wear

Comfortable clothes you can move in freely work best. Think fitted tops and leggings or jazz pants—nothing too loose that gets in your way during turns.

For shoes, jazz sneakers or split-sole jazz shoes give you the right grip and flexibility. Avoid running shoes with thick soles. Some people start barefoot and that's fine too while you're figuring things out.

Bring a water bottle. Classes get physical and you'll want to stay hydrated without interrupting your rhythm.

What to Expect

  • Warm-ups start slow and build gradually—your body needs time to adjust
  • Instructors break down combinations step by step, repeating until the pattern clicks
  • Everyone learns at their own pace, and that's completely normal
  • Making mistakes is part of the process—you'll stumble, laugh, and try again
  • Classes run between 60-90 minutes depending on the level
  • You don't need prior dance experience to join beginner sessions

Getting Your Body Ready

Jazz dance asks your body to do things it probably hasn't done before. Sharp isolations, quick weight shifts, sustained balances—movements that feel awkward at first but become second nature with practice.

Physical Preparation

You don't need to be in peak shape to start. What helps is being comfortable standing, moving, and following instructions for an hour or more. If you've been mostly sedentary, maybe start taking walks or doing light stretching a week or two before your first class. Not mandatory, just helpful.

Common Questions We Hear

Do I need to be flexible? No. Flexibility improves naturally as you practice. We include stretching in every class.

What if I can't keep up? Then you take a breath and jump back in when you're ready. Nobody's timing you.

Will I look foolish? Probably at some point, yes. So will everyone else. That's how learning works.

Mental Readiness

This matters more than physical prep, honestly. Jazz dance involves memorizing sequences, coordinating arms and legs differently than usual, and doing all of it in time with music. Your brain works just as hard as your muscles.

Some people pick up choreography quickly. Others need more repetition. Neither approach is better—they're just different. What matters is showing up with patience for yourself and willingness to try things that feel strange at first.

About Our Space

Our studio has changing rooms, water fountains, and a viewing area where friends or family can watch if they want. We keep the temperature comfortable but you'll still work up a sweat. The floor is sprung wood—designed specifically for dance to reduce impact on your joints.

Before You Book

Check our schedule for beginner-friendly classes. Most run in the evening—6:30pm and 7:45pm slots are popular. Weekend morning classes fill up fast during enrollment periods.

You can drop in for a single class to test things out, or sign up for a session that runs several weeks. Either way, arrive about 10 minutes early your first time so we can get you oriented without rushing.

Ready to Start Moving?

The hardest part is just deciding to show up. After that, everything else is just putting one foot in front of the other—literally. We'll handle the rest.
